Field (Infinite Loop #1), moving image, 2024

Field is made from plaster, water and paint using casting techniques. This activity of casting-painting produces a hybrid ‘pictorial object’ – a thing between sculpture and image. Emerging out of a crystallisation process as the plaster sets the image is materially bound and manifest.

Inspired by the history of sculptural reproduction and its contribution to the mobility of cultural objects, the intent is to develop an image production process that engages with the complexities of identity, physicality, likeness, multiplicity and variation.

In the context of a contemporary moment where coded technological representations and identities collide, these material objects explore what it means to be a changing image now. The artwork (in its many versions) engages in a critical conversation about: the self and slippage; the plasticity of the (sur)face – its ability to change form, to resist fixed identification.
